Take a Journey Through Our Past with These Memorable Recipes
Have you ever noticed that certain foods or meals bring back memories or feelings from your past? Maybe eating pancakes reminds you of Sunday breakfast with your family when you were 8. Or even just the smell of clam chowder makes you feel ill because it reminds you of the time you got the stomach flu on a trip to Florida when you were 13. That is because food is an effective trigger for evoking memories, even unconscious or trivial, of emotions and feelings. Food memories are often more vivid than other types of memories because they are more sensory, involving all five senses. Food is nostalgic. Eating, smelling, or making a dish can bring back cherished memories from a certain time in your life or of a certain someone. Sarah’s Favorite Travel Time via Food Memory
For me, lasagna is more than just a meal, it’s a gateway to connect with and remember my grandma, Lucy. Growing up, my grandma, Lucy, played a huge role in my life. She was an incredible woman – smart, tough, tenacious, funny, and loving. Some days, I find myself longing to hear her voice, to offer me guidance as she always did, and to tell me to be strong.
One of my fondest memories of our time together is when she taught me how to make lasagna. I couldn’t have been older than 10, but I still remember standing over the counter watching her build the layers—sauce, noodles, ricotta, cheese, repeat. Every time I make lasagna, I think about my grandma. With each layer I build, that void in my heart begins to fill with love and memories of my grandma.
